Day 5 – Puente la Reina to Estella

Today was a beautiful day for walking the Camino! Warm sun and cool air with lots of wind. My walk today took me through rolling hills of farms growing olives, grapes, cherries, and wheat. The trail led from one hill town to another which reminded me of the Tuscany region of Italy…even traversed a section of an old Roman road.

Yesterday, I noticed a few red poppies along the way, but they are everywhere on today’s trail. Also heard a cuckoo bird for the first time today. Up to this point, I thought that cuckoo birds were simply the imagination of German clock makers. Hope to get a audio recording of that over the coming days.

In Day 3’s blog I mentioned spying a 4-legged pilgrim. Today I had the opportunity to meet the Irish Setter that is making the Camino. His human pilgrim companions are from Switzerland, and walk a section of the Camino each year. They seemed completely at ease with staying in the hostels, or Albergues, with their dog.

I am now in Estella, a somewhat larger town that has many iglesia (churches).

Before I sign off, I want to wish all the mothers (and mothers to be) a wonderful Mother’s Day especially my lovely wife, Beth, and my dear mom…love you all!
