The Camino proved as changeable as ever today. After beautiful weather in Burgos yesterday, I walked to Hornillos del Camino in wet, fall-like conditions. I am now entering the vast, flat meseta that will carry me over the coming days to the next large town of Leon.
In the meantime, I will be passing through tiny villages like Rabé de las Calzadas where I stopped to dry out and have coffee mid-morning. On the way out of town I found the main church, but it was locked up. Continuing to the village outskirts I saw a small chapel and monestary dedicated to Our Lady (Nuestra Senora). What a difference from the ostentatious cathedral in Burgos. This chapel was small, and tidy with simple alter decorations. An elderly nun gave me a small medal with Mary’s image on a simple piece of string. She insisted on putting the medal over my head and gave me a Camino blessing. I was deeply touched…perhaps because she reminded me of my grandmother. Had to spend some time in the chapel composing myself before continuing down the trail.
Hornillos del Camino is also a very small village that I’m not sure would still exist if not for the Camino sending it a regular stream of pilgrims to lift the economy.

Jeanne and Mark are correct. I don’t know them but I have the little metal on a string too and I still remember the nun placing it over my head.
I see that you left Burgos through the tree-lined path and gate. So cool that you passed through one of the more famous scenes from “The Way.”

Not sure Anne. Possibly a history on the monastery but the box marked “English” actually had German language materials 😉
